A Draw to Liberty and a close one to Coppell
The Lady Vikings came out Monday night against Liberty Christian with a good ryhtme and a consistent attack but a late goal took the game to overtime.
Erin Hippert got the Lady Vikings on the board early before the Lady Warriors evened the score midway through the 2nd half. With the score tied, the Lady Vikings continued to string together passes, taking every opportunity to attack, and through 12 shots and 10 corners alone in the 2nd half they were able to get ahead on a Maddie Cook goal off a corner.
With just 24 seconds to go, the Lady Warriors scored a goal to take the match into overtime.
The overtime saw much of the same as far as an attack for TEAM LVS as they spent the majority of the 20 minute overtime in Liberty Christian's end of the field but were unable to get the game winner as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
The Lady Vikings busy week continued on Tuesday night as the nation's #4 team came to Ft. Worth, Coppell. Coppell came in to the match with a 12-0-2 record, conceding only 3 goals all year. The Lady Vikings sit at 12-7-2, previously ranked at #49 in the country.
The Lady Vikings got on the board first off a corner from Maggie Kleiser and then the game opened up with both teams going end to end.
Coppell, not used to getting scored on, was relentless. They were able to even the score and get the go ahead goal before the half. The Lady Vikings didn't change much but just wanted a bit more of the same. It took one more goal by Coppell before TEAM LVS could get on the board again. At 3-1 down, Jordan Gamboa and Gwennie Puente combined for a nice goal to bring the Lady Vikings within 1.
Coppell wasn't done attacking, they kept the pressure on the whole game, but again, the Lady Vikings kept coming as well. The game resembled a track meet, end to end action with a good pace to the game.
Neither team would muster up a goal and the game ended 3-2 as Coppell improved to 13-0-2 and may jump into the #3 spot nationally right behind #2 Plano West, who they tied 2-2 last week.
"We came up short and lost the game, but we got better in doing so," said Lady Vikings head coach, Jay Fitzgerald.
The Lady Vikings travel to UIL 4A defending State Champion, Highland Park on Friday. Highland Park is currently ranked #7 in the country. JV is at 5:30pm and Varsity is at 7:15pm.
