Varsity gets 8: Ursuline up next

The varsity continued district play tonight in their home opener against TCA and wasted no time.  With 6 goals in the first half and 2 in the second, the Lady Vikings cruised to an 8-0 result over the Lady Trojans, improving to 4-0-0 on the season and 2-0-0 in district play.

"Not a bad day at the office for us, missed a couple early and then got one and settled in," head coach, Jay Fitzgerald said.  He added, "we got too comfortable at times but we really proved that we can be tough to play against if we focus on the details."

TCA does not have a JV team, so that day off will help in preparation for Ursuline on Monday night.  The JV will play at 6:00pm and the varsity to follow at 7:30pm.  The match will be played at Jesuit in Dallas.

Training for both teams tomorrow at Gateway and in the computer lab on Friday.  There will be no JV match against All Saints this week and it will not be rescheduled.

LVS Opens District with a win; Home Opener Tomorrow

The Lady Vikings JV and Varsity teams combined for 8 goals Monday night as they opened the TAPPS 1-5A District season on the road at John Paul II.  Marissa Baldasti, Koryn Brookshire, Katie Ripple, Becca Traynor, and Kat Paul were the 5 different LVSers that scored goals in the JV's 5-0 win.

Head coach, Alex Mechalske, saw tons of positives in the win.  "A lot of players contributed and set the tone for the season", Mechalske commented.

The varsity followed the JV but had to come from behind early.

"We were in all the right spots, but early on we struggled to get a hold of the ball and we paid the price," head coach Jay Fitzgerald said.

After going down a goal in the 6th minute of play, the Lady Vikings scored 3 unanswered goals.  Elena "Lenny" Guerra got the scoring started in the 25th minute with a gritty effort getting on the other end of a Gwennie Puente cross.  "The goal was very important and the way we chipped away at them to get it, was impressive," Fitzgerald commented.

Puente got, what would be, the game-winner in the 2nd half after taking a pass from Emma Chandlee right up the middle and slotting it home for a 2-1 Lady Viking lead.  Puente wasn't done then as she was able to weave her way through the John Paul defense and slip a well timed ball through to Emily Keoughan for the 2 goal lead.

That is the way it stood for the Lady Vikings as they improve to 3-0-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in district.

Next up for the Lady Vikings is TCA at home tomorrow night at 7:00pm at Doskocil Stadium.  This match will just be a varsity match as TCA was not able to make a JV team.

U.S. WOMEN'S NATIONAL TEAM WILL OPEN 2014 SCHEDULE ON JAN. 31 AGAINST CANADA AT TOYOTA STADIUM IN FRISCO, TEXAS

CHICAGO (Nov. 21, 2013) - The U.S. Women's National Team will open its 2014 schedule with a match against Canada on Jan. 31, at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, home to FC Dallas of Major League Soccer. The match will kick off at 8 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on FOX Sports 1.

Ticket information for the match will be announced at a later date.

The USA and Canada met once this year, a 3-0 victory for the Americans in front of a sold-out crowd at BMO Field in Toronto that saw Alex Morgan score twice and Sydney Leroux add a clincher.

"It's great to start the year with a game that is going to be a real test for us and a game that is always highly competitive," said U.S. head coach Tom Sermanni. "It's a friendly game, but one that's meaningful for both teams, and it's an excellent first match in a year that will end with World Cup qualifying. In 2014, it will be important to play as many quality opponents as possible."

This will be the third appearance for the U.S. Women at Toyota Stadium, and the second match there against Canada. The USA last played in Frisco on Feb. 11, 2012, in front of 20,677 fans that braved near-freezing temperatures to see Morgan score two late goals to pull out a 2-1 victory against New Zealand. The USA also played there in May 2007 in 6-2 victory over Canada.

The match should once again showcase the world's top two active goal scorers in Abby Wambach of the USA, who sits on 163 career goals, and Christine Sinclair of Canada, who has found the net 146 times.

Additional Notes:
The USA has an all-time record of 46-3-5 against Canada.
The two countries have faced each other in the last two Olympics, a 2-1 quarterfinal win for the USA in 2008 and a dramatic 4-3 semifinal triumph in overtime for the Americans in 2012.
The U.S. team is ranked No. 1 in the latest FIFA Women's World Rankings while Canada is No 7.
The USA finished 2013 with an unbeaten record of 13-0-3 and scored 56 goals while allowing 11.
This will be the USA's 10th all-time match in Texas where it holds a 9-0-0 record.

The USA's first appearance in Texas was a 9-1 win against Canada on May 19, 1995, at Franklin Field in Dallas and drew 6,145 fans, which was at the time the second-largest crowd ever to watch the U.S. team in the United States.

LVS making a difference off the field

The Lady Vikings Soccer Program headed down to West, Texas to promote goal setting, giving a helping hand, and dreaming big.  Two communities coming together...  Soccer is a sport that brings people together.  It is a sport where the aspects of teamwork, communication, and problem solving can be used off the field as well.

"The town of West has gone through a lot in the past year and these kids were just wonderful, respectful, tons of energy, and STRONG," said head coach, Jay Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald added, "It shows how well these kids are being raised and it is great to see smiles.  We can't wait to come back."

The Lady Vikings Soccer program covered a lot of miles yesterday.  After traveling to West, they took their journey to West Fort Worth and decided to square off against each other at the Fun on the Run Park.  Hearing things like, "surrender", "that's gonna leave a mark", "get down", and "go, go, go, go" was definitely  encouraging unless you were part of Team 1, who spent most of their time in the deadzone.

It didn't stop there for the Lady Vikes, as they took to the world's largest haunted house, the Cutting Edge and then back to Nolan to catch the end of the Vikings Football game.

What a day for the Lady Vikings... a special day for the kids of West and a special day for the ladies of Nolan Catholic.  With the image of kids smiling faces and the resemblance of paint, sweat, dirt, blood, some whelps, dust, foam, and a little bit of Taco Bell.. it was a complete and fulfilling day.

To conclude the day the players will have an opportunity to get outside their comfort zone, overcome their fears and SCREAM at the Cutting Edge Haunted House.

TEAM White had a 25-8 lead going into March Madness.  TEAM Blue is leading in Braketology 45-42, but they have only made up 3 points on TEAM White and trail 67-53.  Bracketology could get interesting as TEAM White picked Gonzaga to win the National Championship and they got knocked out in the 3rd Round by Wichita State.  TEAM Blue picked Syracuse to upset another #1 seed in Indiana and had a good pick in Arizona to beat #3 seed New Mexico.

Today the team hit the field with a focus on driving balls and technique and TEAM Blue took a 30 point lead on the day only to see that lead disappear with TEAM White tying it up in the 18 yard box heading competition.

The standings as of today has TEAM White still leading by 15, with an overall score of 97-83.

Here are the team picks as March Madness moves into the Sweet 16....

A Draw to Liberty and a close one to Coppell

The Lady Vikings came out Monday night against Liberty Christian with a good ryhtme and a consistent attack but a late goal took the game to overtime.

Erin Hippert got the Lady Vikings on the board early before the Lady Warriors evened the score midway through the 2nd half.  With the score tied, the Lady Vikings continued to string together passes, taking every opportunity to attack, and through 12 shots and 10 corners alone in the 2nd half they were able to get ahead on a Maddie Cook goal off a corner.

With just 24 seconds to go, the Lady Warriors scored a goal to take the match into overtime.

The overtime saw much of the same as far as an attack for TEAM LVS as they spent the majority of the 20 minute overtime in Liberty Christian's end of the field but were unable to get the game winner as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

The Lady Vikings busy week continued on Tuesday night as the nation's #4 team came to Ft. Worth, Coppell.  Coppell came in to the match with a 12-0-2 record, conceding only 3 goals all year.  The Lady Vikings sit at 12-7-2, previously ranked at #49 in the country.

The Lady Vikings got on the board first off a corner from Maggie Kleiser and then the game opened up with both teams going end to end.

Coppell, not used to getting scored on, was relentless.  They were able to even the score and get the go ahead goal before the half.  The Lady Vikings didn't change much but just wanted a bit more of the same.  It took one more goal by Coppell before TEAM LVS could get on the board again.  At 3-1 down, Jordan Gamboa and Gwennie Puente combined for a nice goal to bring the Lady Vikings within 1.

Coppell wasn't done attacking, they kept the pressure on the whole game, but again, the Lady Vikings kept coming as well.  The game resembled a track meet, end to end action with a good pace to the game.

Neither team would muster up a goal and the game ended 3-2 as Coppell improved to 13-0-2 and may jump into the #3 spot nationally right behind #2 Plano West, who they tied 2-2 last week.

"We came up short and lost the game, but we got better in doing so," said Lady Vikings head coach, Jay Fitzgerald.

The Lady Vikings travel to UIL 4A defending State Champion, Highland Park on Friday.  Highland Park is currently ranked #7 in the country.  JV is at 5:30pm and Varsity is at 7:15pm.

Shutout over Dunne; Byron Nelson Next

The Lady Vikings scored 7 unanswered goals during the night, capped off my Maddie Cook's 2 goal performance, her first 2 career high school goals. Five different players scored goals (Sarah Brown, Jordan Gamboa, Maggie Kleiser, Gabby Parra, Erin Hippert), as they improve to 12-6-2.

The JV and Varsity will hit the road again tomorrow evening as they take on Byron Nelson at 5pm and 7pm in Trophy Club.

The JV is coming off a 3rd Place finish at the Charger Cup this past weekend as they outscored opponents 12-5 in route to a 2-1, Third Place win over host, Keller Central.

Marisa Rodenbaugh evened the match as the Lady Vikings went down 1-0 and then Kat Paul scored the game winner, her 4th goal of the tournament.

Other scorers on the weekend were Marissa Baldasti with 5 and Kayla Chapman with 2.

The JV improves to 7-2-4 on the year.

Varsity continues District Play at Dunne Tonight

Varsity heads to Northwest Tonight; JV looks to advance in Charger Cup

The Varsity will play its lone match this week as they travel to Justin, TX to take on Northwest High School at Texan Stadium at 7:30pm.  They look to improve on their overall record of 10-6-2 as they prepare for their last 3 district matches the next 3 weeks.

The JV won an impressive match last night against Denton Guyer on a first minute goal by Marissa Baldasti off an assist from Elena Guerra.  That goal was all they needs as the recorded the shutout to improve to 5-1-4 overall.  They play Sam Houston tonight at 7:00pm at Charger Stadium on the campus of Keller Central High School.

Light Week for Varsity; JV in Charger Cup

TEAM LVS in CHHS Allison Horn Memorial Tonight

After hosting and playing in one of the most prestigious high school girls showcases in the country, the National Elite Prep Showcase last week, TEAM LVS has another tough task ahead of them as the open with #47 Grapevine tonight at 8:00pm at Mustang-Panther Stadium.

The Lady Vikings went 1-2-1 in the NEPS last week defeating Tyler Lee, drawing to Martin, and losing out to Liberty High School from California and the nations #1 team, Plano West.

Keeping a lead has been a challenge for the Lady Vikings during the 2nd half of the year. They were up 1-0 on Plano West and 2-0 and 3-2 against Martin and finished with a loss and a tie. At least the lady Vikings are scoring. "It has been up and down for us but I am OK with that right now; we have started strong and set the tone and we have come back from being down," said head coach Jay Fitzgerald.

The Lady Vikings have scored 46 goals in 15 games and only given up 20. They sit at 8-3-0 in district play and 9-5-1 overall.

Competition is what TEAM LVS aspires.

"We want to play the most competitive schedule in the country, it helps us continue to grow as a program, and the players grow as well," Fitzgerald commented.

So why not schedule the nations #1 team as the host of their own tournament and then the very next week, take on the nations #2 team in Southlake Carroll. That match will take place on Saturday morning at 11:00am at Colleyville Heritage High School. But before that match, they take on UIL 5A Regional Finalist, Arlington High School on Friday night at 8:00pm at Colleyville Heritage as well.

Lady Vikings look to even their record at the NEPS

Kicking off the NEPS with the nations #1 team, Plano West was an opportunity, an opportunity that saw the Lady Vikings up 1-0 on an Emma Chandlee goal in the 10th minute. Up a goal on the best team in the country? Only to be down a goal a halftime. The highs and lows of sports, the "ups and the downs", that is what this Lady Vikings group has dealt with the entire season. The match ended up 4-1, but at the end it didn't feel like a 3 goal loss. A lot of good came of the match. That good spilled into the next match against Tyler Lee as the Lady Vikings found the back of the next twice with 2 goals from Gwennie Puente and improved to 8-4-0. They are back on track or are they? No bus as it broke down taking the men's soccer team to the Jesuit Inviational last night, so now they have to travel to TCU to play in the first of 2 featured matches vs Liberty High School from Brentwood, California, in a carpool. The team meets and discusses their game plan for the match ahead. The match starts and the Lady Vikings are taking advantage of what was discussed with them during the pre-game. One good thing leads to another and opportunities come in waves but nothing really dangerous but could very well easily have resulted in goals. Liberty was a very disciplined team, very organized and a good purpse to what they are doing. If you let them hang around they will haunt you and that is exactly what they did in the 65th minute as they poked one in and that dropped the Lady Vikings to 8-5-0 and with Martin on the schedule tomorrow during Day 3 of the National Elite Prep Showcase and win or a tie is what the Lady Vikings will be happy with. TEAM LVS vs Martin 12:00pm at Nolan

TEAM LVS takes on the #1 Team in the Country Tonight

TEAM LVS looks to rebound after a district loss to Bishop Lynch on Monday night as they host the National Elite Prep Showcase for the 11th Year tonight through Saturday, bringing the nations best high school girls soccer to Fort Worth.

The Lady Vikings take on Plano West tonight at 7pm at Doskocil Stadium.  Other games played at Nolan Catholic today are St. Stephen's vs Northwest at 3pm and the big California vs Florida match-up at 5pm where, NEPS regular, St. Thomas Aquinas from Fort Lauderdale, FL takes on Liberty High School from Brentwood, CA.

The Lady Vikings JV travel to Grapevine to play in the GCISD JV Invitational where they will play host, Grapevine, at 5:30pm at Cross Timbers Middle School Stadium.  That event runs through Saturday as well.
