LVS in Post-Season Playing Best Soccer

The Lady Vikings spent the first 8 weeks of the season ranked in the Top 30 in the country, as high as #19, in the ESPNHS National Poll.

After going 2-1-1 in the nations top high school showcase, the National Elite Prep Showcase, they hit a bump in the road against the nations #2 team, Marcus. They then, were one game away from advancing to back to back Allison Horn Memorial Showcase Championship games before being upended by Keller.

After 2 consecutive showcase weekends, the Lady Vikings traveled down to Austin to face St. Stephen's which ended in a draw. That trip was all the Lady Vikings needed to realize they are playing their best soccer of the season.

On senior night, this past Tuesday night, they fell behind to 4A public school powerhouse, Highland Park, before storming back in the 2nd half on a Emma Chandlee equalizer.

Highland Park is currently undefeated. After they evened the score, the Lady Vikings had several chances to go ahead but eventually ran out of time and had to settle for another draw, their 7th draw of the season.

"We pride ourselves on playing the nations most competitive schedule year in and year out," said Nolan Catholic head coach, Todd Fitzgerald. He added, "We want our young ladies to feel the pressure on a regular basis, because now a days, that is life and it is extremely important that our players leave this program with the necessary skills on and off the field to make intelligent decisions as they move on to the next stage of their lives."

The education of life through soccer is what Lady Vikings Soccer is all about.

The Lady Vikings finish the regular season with an overall record of 11-7-7 which has put them in a position to host Houston St. Pius X in the Area Round of the TAPPS Women's Soccer Division 1 Playoffs.

Now, records are all at 0-0-0 and the Lady Vikings will look to improve on their consecutive streak of 12 straight State Championship appearances. Saturday kick-off is set for 11:00am at Nolan Catholics Doskocil Stadium.

Senior Night; Chandlee Equalizes

The Lady Vikings played one last regular season match before the playoffs begin on Saturday. Undefeated 4A powerhouse, Highland Park came to town and the Lady Vikings were up to the test. The match was back and forth with the Lady Vikings putting a lot of pressure on the Lady Scots back line and then the momentum started to change and Highland Park got on the board and took the lead just before halftime.

Melissa Brodnicki, Megan Billingsley, Allaire Langdon, and Lindsay Murray were all honored at halftime. In their 4 years of commitment to Lady Vikings Soccer, the program has won 75 matches and have outscored opponents 273-109. Their service to the program is truly appreciated.

Just after halftime, the Lady Vikings took some time to get the rhythm back in the match but as the match went on, the Lady Vikings set the necessary tone to even the game on a goal by Emma Chandlee. The goal will be a candidate for Goal of the Year.

The ball was picked up at midfield by Gwennie Puente and she took it about 40 yards while Chandlee made an overlapping run out of the midfield and just as she got herself through the Highland Park backline, Puente slipped a ball through into her stride and the rest in history.

Moments later the Lady Vikings had 3 quality chances to score the go ahead goal and earned their 7th draw of the season.

The Lady Vikings are currently at 11-7-7 and open the playoffs as they play host to Houston St. Pius X at Doskocil Stadium on Saturday, February 4th at 11am. The men will follow as they drew Houston Christian in the first round.

Lady Vikings to Host Highland Park on Tuesday

The 12-6-5 Lady Vikings will play host to Highland Park on Tuesday night at Doskocil Stadium. The JV will kick-off at 5:30pm and the Varsity will follow at 7:15pm.

It will be senior night and the Lady Vikings will honor 4 seniors for their commitment and dedication to the Nolan Catholic Women's Soccer Program.

LVS JV Crowned Back to Back Champions

The Lady Vikings JV Program was crowned Back to Back TAPPS JV Champions with a 4-2 Shootout victory over Ursuline. With an overall record of 8-3-5 on the year and a 4-1-3 finish in TAPPS 1-5A, the Lady Vikings have outscored opponents 29-13 so far on the season.

The JV squad will play in there final home match of the season against Highland Park on Tuesday at 5:30pm at Doskocil Stadium. Go Lady Vikes!!

Lady Vikings draw at Byron Nelson; Playoffs start next week

After a slow start for the Lady Vikings, they explode for two second half goals by Ashley Fischer and Gwennie Puente. With an overall record of 12-6-5, this was just what the Lady Vikings needed going into the playoffs next week.

As the match went on Nolan got better, as the match turned physical, Nolan stayed composed and establish a consistent rhythm which created plenty of space for Fischer and Punete up top. Senior, Lindsay Murray set the tone as soon as she came on the field in the second half and had the assist on the equalizer.

Kathleen Keoghnan also made an impact as she was slotted in the middle of the park to balance and link things up.

Freshman, goalkeeper Piper Head had a solid 2nd half to keep the Lady Bobcats off the board.

The Lady Vikings head to Austin tomorrow to play a friendly event at St. Stephen's.

A 14-game district season to start the year and now their 7th game in 9 days, the Lady Vikings get to enjoy a light week with a game on Wednesday night and then a couple friendly matches in Austin on Friday.

The playoff preparation begins.

The Lady Vikings currently sit at #2 in the district and have spent the last 8 weeks in the ESPN Top 30 National Poll. This is the longest consecutive stretch in the National Polls for Nolan Catholic since the National Polls began in 1998 and they have been as high at #3 and been in the Top 10 on 6 different occasions.

With an 11-6-4 overall mark, the Lady Vikings look to continue their winning tradition into the playoffs beginning the first week in February.

This year they travel down a different path and they have done so with 8 underclassmen. The Lady Vikes had to go on the road during the entire post-season as they finished 4th in the district last season after finishing no lower than 2nd at any time in the history of the program.

From front to back these underclassmen are making a difference starting with Gwennie Puente up top with Emma Chandlee, Sarah Brown, Chelsea Surpris, and Rebecca Traynor in the midfield and Gabbie Puente and last years, Nolan Catholic Athlete of the Year and TAPPS 1-5A Newcomer of the Year, Elizabeth Havenhill in the back and in goal for the Lady Vikings is Piper Head.

This core of young players have a wealth of experience playing for some of the best clubs in the country and have put Nolan Catholic back on the map gaining local, regional, and national respect.

Since 1983, this program is just shy of 500 wins, averaging more than 16 wins a year. They look to advance to their 12th straight State Championship match and capture their 12th straight Regional Championship.

Upcoming for the Lady Vikes is Byron Nelson on Wednesday, St. Stephen's on Friday rounding out the season at home hosting Highland Park which is Senior Night honoring 4 seniors: Lindsay Murray, Melissa Brodnicki, Allaire Langdon, and Megan Billingsley.

2012 Allison Horn Memorial Showcase starts today

The Lady Vikings head to Colleyville tonight through Saturday to compete in the 2012 CHHS Allison Horn Memorial Showcase. In 2010, the Lady Vikings won their bracket and advanced to the championship match against Plano West were they were defeated by a score of 1-0.

The Lady Vikings look to continue that success here at the event tonight against Martin at 8pm at Colleyville Heritage.

Friday's match is against L.D. Bell is at 8pm at Mustang-Panther Stadium and then Saturday at 11am vs Keller at Mustang-Panther as well.

The Championship Match will be at 5pm on Saturday at Mustang-Panther.

The #29 ranked Lady Vikings finish a successful weekend in the National Elite Prep Showcase with its only blemish to #22 ranked Westlake 1-0 at TCU's Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.

On Thursday the Lady Vikings drew to #19 Kindwood 1-1 and then rebounded on Friday with a 3-1 win over last years UIL 5A State Semi-Finalist Clear Lake from Houston. Then on Saturday Nolan Catholic took on Southern California's Murrieta Valley in route to a 2-0 shutout.

The Lady Vikings will take to the road on Tuesday as they travel to Marcus for a 6pm JV match followed by a 7:30pm Varsity kick-off.

#29 LVS played #19 Kingwood to a Draw

Lady Vikings, Gaby Larson put the team on the board in the 17th minute in a match that saw a tale of 2 halves. Larson took a clearance and hit it first time from about 25 yards out but the Lady Vikings gave up the equalizer later in the 2nd half and that is the way it ended.

The draw marked the 4th on the season. Nolan will look to get into double digits in the win column this weekend as they sit at 8-3-4 on the season. They play host to Clear Lake tomorrow at 10am and then travel to TCU for the first of the evening feature matches, the second between #9 Carroll and Rosary starting at 8pm.

Alumni Game a Success

Coming off a scrimmage win against Paschal last night. The Lady Vikings take to the field again this morning in the 8th Annual Lady Vikings Alumni Game. Nolan Catholic is celebrating its 50th Year Anniversary and since 1983 the Lady Vikings Women's Soccer Team has won 485 games for an average of more than 17 wins per season.

Very exciting times continue for the program that was built on commitment, dedication, and resilience. Lady Viking Alumni as far back as the Class of 1988 joined the party this morning and helped the Alumni put up 3 goals against the current Lady Vikings.

The program has gained local, regional, and national respect throughout the years. As the top local high school girls soccer team in the City of Fort Worth, they also sit at #31 in the country in the ESPNHS National Poll and have been nationally ranked each year since they stormed on the national scene in 1999 as high as #3 in the Nation.

Thanks to everyone who made it out today and we are grateful for the support and hard work you have put into this program. Thanks for helping us continue the Winning Tradition here at Nolan Catholic.

The Lady Vikings open the New Year with a district match vs John Paul. The Lady Vikings will host the Cardinals at All Saints Episcopal School in Fort Worth due to the construction of the track at Doskocil Stadium. The varsity match will follow the JV match which kicks off at 6:00pm. The #34 nationally ranked Vikings look to improve on their 8-2-2 record.

Nolan will host Paschal High School on Friday at 6:00pm and 7:30pm at TCU's Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium in preparation for the Nation Elite Prep Showcase which begins on January 12th.

The Nolan Catholic Women's Soccer Program will hold its Annual Alumni Game this Saturday at 11:00am.

Monday night the Lady Vikings will take on Liberty Christian in Argyle for a 7:00pm kick-off. The two teams met on November 1st as they kicked off the season and the Lady Vikings came out on top by a score of 8-0.

Loos Stadium in Dallas is the location for the 2nd high powered rivalry of the year against Ursuline. Nolan Catholic came back from 2 goals down to even the score before Ursuline scored the game-winner just 2 minutes before time expired for a score of 3-2. Wednesdays game will kick-off at 7:00pm with the JV playing before at 5:30pm. The JV teams tied 0-0 in their first meeting of the year.

You know when high school soccer season is here, the temperature drops and the wind picks up. Nolan Catholics arch rival, Ursuline comes to town and the match didn't disappoint. This is arguably one of the greatest rivalries in high school sports.

Ursuline's Candace Johnson and Kellie Schnurr put the Lady Bears up by two but the relentless Lady Vikings fought right back and evened the score with 2 more goals from freshman, forward Gwennie Puente. "Gwennie is a special player," head coach Todd Fitzgerald said. Puente has scored 5 goals in the first 2 matches of the season.

Nolan Catholic fought back but it wasn't enough as with less than 2 minutes to play, Kate Hadju scored the game-winner for the Bears. Fitzgerald mentioned that, "Ursuline knows how to win matches like this but we are real, real close."

The Lady Vikings drop to 1-1 while Ursuline moves to 1-0. LVS heads out on the road next Monday night to take on Bishop Lynch. Lynch defeated TCA last night in double overtime 1-0.

Lady Vikings Explode for 8 Goals in Home Opener; Freshman Hat Trick

Freshman, forward Gwennie Puente scored her first, second, and third goals of her high school career to complete the hat trick in her first high school game. With a 4-0 lead at halftime, the Lady Vikings were well on their way to a 1-0 start in district. There was a good rythme in the game and a good flow about things.

"We wanted a strong start and with 3 goals in the first 10 minutes, our team responded," said LVS head coach, Todd Fitzgerald. Last years TAPPS 1-5A Newcomer of the Year, sophomore, Elizabeth Havenhill also scored multiple goals with 2 unassisted goals in the second half.

Seniors Lindsay Murray and Alex Perez added a goal a piece as well as junior, Maggie Kleiser.

Fitzgerald went on to say, "These young ladies have worked extremely hard in the off-season and we feel like we have a good team identity right now."

The Lady Vikings are back at it again tomorrow night as they play host to Ursuline in a re-match of last years State Championship. The JV match will kick-off at 6:30pm with the varsity following at 8:00pm at Doskocil Stadium.

The Nolan Catholic Women's Soccer Team prepares for it first match of the season, a district match vs Liberty Christian on Tuesday, November 1st. "We are chomping at the bit to get started," said LVS Head Coach Todd Fitzgerald.

The match on Tuesday night is not only the home opener but the district opener as well. Kick-off is set for 7:00pm.

Fitzgerald went on to say, "Off-season has been extremely productive and we are ready to go; we have a young, experienced team which will fit in well with the LVS tradition around here."

The Lady Vikings are at home the very next night, on Wednesday, for a State Championship re-match against Ursuline. The JV will kick-off at 6:30pm while the varsity will follow at 8:00pm.

LVS12 has officially begun. The Lady Vikings look to continue their winning tradition in their quest to another State Championship appearance. Head Coach, Todd Fitzgerald has taken over on the sideline. Fitzgerald has been apart of the Lady Vikings Varsity staff for the past 12 years and is extremely excited for it all to get started. "Off-season energy is where it needs to be right now," Fitzgerald commented.

In just 2 short weeks, the Lady Vikings will host Liberty Christian and then head on the road the very next day for a re-match of the State Championship, against Ursuline Academy.

The Lady Vikings will be busy in November and December with district matches each week, finishing up district play on January 8th. Following district play, Nolan Catholic will play against some of the top public school powerhouses in the country throughout the rest of January and into February.

Nolan Catholic will once again host to ever-popular Nolan Showcase which has been renamed, the National Elite Prep Showcase. The Showcase is in it's 10th year and is touted at the nation's most competitive college showcase event. College coaches come from all over the country to evaluate talent from the nations top high school teams. Try-Outs will be held on Monday, Oct. 17th in the evening from 7:00pm-9:00pm at the Stadium. All players interested in Lady Vikings Soccer need to attend. The teams will be posted on Tuesday morning and the final rosters will be submitted on Monday, October 31st.

School wins 21st straight state title, setting U.S. record ... or does it?

You'll have to forgive the Ursuline (Texas) Academy girls soccer program if it feels a little aggrieved, despite winning what should be a national-record 21st straight state title on Saturday. The Bears have good reason to be upset: Despite the fact that their 21 consecutive titles is a national record, it's not being credited as a nationwide mark because of the association in which Ursuline competes.

As pointed out by the Dallas Morning News' Corbett Smith, Ursuline competes in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools -- TAPPS -- just as all other private schools across the state do. That stands in sharp contrast to most states across the country, which integrate public schools and private schools in the same athletic governing body.

As it turns out, in states that have separate public and private athletic organizations, only the public leagues are considered when determining historic records. Therefore, the 21 trophies currently ensconced in the Ursuline athletic facilities are worth little more than two decades of bragging rights over other all-girls schools, according to the folks at the National Sports Record Book.

According to Smith, Portland (Ore.) Catlin Gable High holds the record for most consecutive girls soccer titles with 11. That's right, the current record-holders have been outdone by the Bears by a whopping decade worth of state titles, yet are still recognized as the most successful streak-owning girls soccer program in the nation.

If there was any question that Ursuline was deserving of recognition, the Bears likely answered those questions in their title-game victory. After falling behind by a goal in the early moments, Ursuline responded with four consecutive goals to run roughshod over runner-up Fort Worth (Texas) Nolan Catholic School, 4-1.

"At this point in the season it's more about emotion then about technical or tactical play," Ursuline coach Jamie Cantrell told the Morning News. "We knew if we got down one, we trained for it."

At that point in the season, Cantrell's team has known exactly what to do time and again. It's just time that the rest of the country acknowledged its greatness.

LSU commit, Paige Harris was flawless in goal, shutting out her third opponent in a row for a total of 10 on the year.

"We expected to be in the State Championship and these young ladies played like that," commented head coach Jay Fitzgerald, "they are a different team from the regular season and they belong here." The Lady Vikings defeated John Paul for the 2nd time this year, the last being on January 4th which was a milestone for the Nolan Catholic Women's Soccer team marking the programs 400th win since 1986.

The State Championship is nothing new for the Lady Vikings, as they have advanced to the final for the 11th straight year facing Ursuline in each of those years.

Ursuline defeated San Antonio Antonian 7-0 in the semi-final game. The State Championship is tomorrow at 12:00pm at Heros Stadium in San Antonio.

LVS has developed a special bond with the San Clemente Women's Soccer Team from California. We want to wish our sister team, the Lady Tritons, a special congratulations on advancing to the CIF SS Division 1 post-season playoffs as the #1 seed. San Clemente will take on Orange Lutheran High School in the first round on Thursday.

San Clemente traveled to Fort Worth in January to compete in the Nolan Showcase Presented by JATO and went undefeated with wins over #19 Southlake Carroll, #6 St. Thomas Aquinas (FL State Champion), and Dallas Ursuline Academy.

The Lady Vikings showed the Tritons a night of Texas hospitality at the Fort Worth Stockyards. The teams feasted at Coopers BBQ and then danced the night away at the World's Largest Honky Tonk, Billy Bob's of Texas. Ending the night mixing it up with as many flavors and toppings as their little heart desired at Menchie’s. Good times in Fort Worth.
As San Clemente advances to CIF post-season play, so has the Lady Vikings. They travelled to Houston to defeat St. Agnes and gain their 11th straight Regional Championship. With the win, the Lady Vikings have advanced to the TAPPS Women's Soccer Final Four in San Antonio which kicks off on Friday. Eleven years and counting, the Lady Vikings take the Regional Championship back to Fort Worth and advance to the TAPPS Women's Soccer Final Four next Friday in San Antonio.

One goal was all it took for Nolan Catholic and that goal was the first of the season for junior, Alex Perez. It came in the 61st minute. Perez took a perfectly placed cross from senior, Sara Chandlee and flicked it over the Lady Tigers goalkeeper.

"We have necessarily been opportunistic and have underachieved for most of the year but not today," said Lady Vikings head coach Jay Fitzgerald, "It is the playoffs and we are a different team."

Another road win for the Lady Vikings brings them one step closer to a State Championship. Seven out of the 10 wins for Nolan Catholic have come on the away from home.

Experience and emotion are huge this time of year and the Nolan Catholic Women's Soccer Team have been here and that competitive edge got them to another Final Four.

The Lady Vikings will take on John Paul on Friday at 11:00am at San Antonio's Heros Stadium for a chance to play in the State Championship match the following day at 12:00pm.

Multiple goals, a clean slate, and a road win, move the Lady Vikings one step closer to State. Senior, Forward Kayleen Negron gets the game-winner in the 5th minute and that is all the Lady Vikings needed to move on to the Regional Championship match on Saturday.

Junior, Forward Lindsey Murray added another goal half way through the first half for her 6th goal of the season.

"It is nice to see contribution from our forwards and players coming off the bench," commented head coach Jay Fitzgerald. Its shows the depth and versatility that the Nolan Catholic squad has. Of the 21 players on the team, 13 of them have scored a goal. "We are excited about our chances in the playoffs," Fitzgerald said, "We are playing with a chip on our shoulder."

The Lady Vikings held Austin St. Michael's to 3 shots the entire match and took 23 of their own. The field was not as expected; it was narrow and hard but the Lady Vikings dealt with the environment with a shutout win, on the road and in the playoffs.

The Nolan Women's Soccer team enjoys going on the road, as the majority of their wins have come away from home. Fitzgerald went on to say, "I look forward to taking my team away from home - it gives us a chance to show off our program. I am proud of these young ladies"

Well, Fitzgerald and his program will get to do that for the remainder of the season as they travel to Houston to take on St. Agnes on Saturday and with a win there, they advance to the Final Four the following weekend in San Antonio.

The Lady Vikings Soccer program is proud to announce that 3 seniors will continue their soccer careers in college. Sara Chandlee, Paige Harris, and Alex Rios all signed today on National Signing Day. Harris and Rios will both be attending college in Louisiana at LSU and Northwestern State University, respectively, while Chandlee will be heading east to Iona College in New York.

These 3 players have left an impressive stamp on the Nolan Catholic Women's Soccer Program, helping the Lady Vikings to over 40 wins and 40 shutouts, a District Championship, 2 District Runner-Up finishes, 2 Regional Championships, 2 State Runner-Up finishes, National rankings as high as #12 and #7 in the country, and a program milestone with win #400 in January.

"It is another exciting moment for our program and for these young ladies," head coach, Jay Fitzgerald explained, "They deserve the opportunity to play soccer at the next level and we wish them the best."

The Lady Vikings JV Team win the "Double". With an 8-1-1 district record, they take the TAPPS 1-5A District Regular Season title and then storm through the 1st Annual TAPPS JV Championship.

With a 1-0 shutout win over TCA in the semifinal, they advance to play Ursuline in the tournament championship match. Junior, Erin Fisher scored the first goal while junior, Melissa Brodnicki added 2 of her own to defeat the Lady Bears in the championship 3-0.

LVS Wins Final District Game; Head to Austin for First Round of Playoffs

The Lady Vikings scored in the 2nd minute to take a 1-0 lead on TCA on the road last Thursday night. Megan Billingsley scored her 7th goal of the season off an assist from Annie Smithey. Nolan continued to put pressure on the Lady Trojans and got a second goal with 7 minutes to play from Smithey off a cross. Smithey's 4th goal of her senior season turned out to be the game-winner as TCA converted on a penalty kick with about 5 to play in the game.

It is gridlock at the top of the table as 3 teams, including Nolan, are tied for 2nd place. With John Paul defeating Lynch on Friday and Liberty holding the tie-breaker over the Lady Vikings, Nolan will finish 4th in district.

The 4th place finish will mean that the Lady Vikings will travel to Austin on Friday to take on Austin St. Michael's who finished 3rd in District 2. That game will kick-off at 4pm.

Southlake Carroll plays host to the Lady Vikings

FORT WORTH, Texas - McKinney Boyd (McKinney, Texas) lost a player last month who is now a finalist for American Idol. Oddly, the play at the Nolan Showcase resembles another hit TV show – Wipeout.

Through two days at the prestigious high school girls’ soccer event in Texas, the POWERADE FAB 50 Nos. 1, 2 and 3 teams have taken losses. In addition, the No. 10 team lost Friday and the No. 11 squad is 0-2-1. Of course, many of the losses are to other FAB 50-ranked teams, yet the fall-out will result in a new-look Top 10 in next week’s national rankings.

The three teams making the strongest showings through Friday are No. 5 Plano West (Plano, Texas), No. 16 St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and No. 24 San Clemente (San Clemente, Calif.).

SIMPLY PERFECT: It took one shot off the foot of St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) senior Julie Schumacher to take down No. 1 McKinney Boyd, 1-0, on Friday afternoon at Nolan Catholic. The Navy-bound forward accepted a pass from Ana Cuffia about 30 yards from goal midway through the first half and launched a shot toward the far post, which clipped the post and ended up in the goal. The Raiders, ranked No. 16, made the first-half strike stand for their 17th straight shutout victory. Much of St. Thomas Aquinas’ success is tied to the exploits of Schumacher, who now has 26 goals this season. “I don’t score goals to tell you how many goals I have. I score goals to win games for my teammates,” Schumacher said. “I’ll take that goal (against Boyd) over any game where I score four goals, because this one won the game.”

Later Friday night, Aquinas ran its record to 18-0 with a dramatic 1-0 win over Nolan Catholic at Texas Christian University. Cuffia sprung Schumacher for a breakaway with less than two minutes remaining, and Schumacher calmly pushed a shot into the lower right corner. The score came just minutes after Nolan Catholic failed to convert a penalty kick.

“It was not our best game, but we got it done,” stated a relieved Carlos Giron, Aquinas’ longtime head coach.

Aquinas controlled most of the match, but a solid performance by Nolan keeper Paige Harris kept the match scoreless. Nolan Catholic was awarded a penalty kick with just under seven minutes remaining following a hard tackle in the box. Alex Rios, a Mexican youth national team player, took the penalty for the Vikings (8-7-2), and her shot hit the post and the ensuing cross was covered by Aquinas keeper Julia Kantor, who has been in net for all 18 Aquinas shutouts.

“As soon as it hit the post, I got back on my feet and took the cross,” Kantor said. “I got lucky.”

“Jules made herself big enough that [the Nolan shooter] had to go to a corner. Either she was going to miss or she was going to put it in the corner – we got lucky on that one.”

Aquinas faces San Clemente on Saturday morning with a chance to play itself into the national title chase.

HEARTBREAK HOST: Nolan Catholic coach Jay Fitzgerald summed up Friday’s 1-0 loss to Aquinas like this, “That’s Nolan soccer the past couple of decades. We’re good enough to get that one moment, that one situation. Eventually, one day, we’ll take advantage of that moment and that will make this program get over the hump. … We sagged and countered. We took away what they do best and made them work for a solution. In the end, that’s what they did – they found the solution and that’s why they are where they are [undefeated].”

In Fitzgerald’s 13 years as Nolan’s head coach, the team has been the private school state runner-up 11 times -- including the past 10 straight, losing all 11 final appearances to Ursuline Academy (Dallas, Texas). The last-minute loss to Aquinas was eerily similar to several state final defeats, prompting Fitzgerald to shake his head and say, “Heartbreaking."

LONG DAY: Players from San Clemente boarded a 7:30 a.m. flight in California, arrived in Texas at noon and played Southlake Carroll (Southlake, Texas) at 6 p.m. There was certainly no jet lag as San Clemente rolled to a 4-0 victory in a meeting of FAB 50 teams at TCU. Janae Cousineau scored the first and third goals, and both were backbreakers for Carroll. Cousineau’s first strike came 10 minutes into the match and two minutes later Alex Reisinger gave San Clemente a 2-0 lead. Cousineau’s scored her second goal, both assisted by Tessa Andujar, two minutes into the second half to thwart any hope of a Carroll rally.

“On the flight, we were really intimidated by this tournament because we had no idea what to expect,” said Cousineau, who has committed to Texas A&M. “After that first goal, we pushed hard because we knew we can do it. Once we get the first goal, we don’t let down.”

MAKING A STATEMENT: Plano West (Plano, Texas) was dealt a setback when goalkeeper Abby Smith opted against playing high school soccer due to youth national team commitments. Even without the star keeper, the No. 5 Wolves, with mostly sophomores in the starting lineup, are off to a 3-0 start following victories Friday over No. 10 Clear Lake (Houston, Texas) and Grapevine (Grapevine, Texas). Sam Wolf and Casie Ramsier scored in Plano West’s 2-1 win over Clear Lake. Taylor Jackson scored the lone goal in the team’s 1-0 victory over Grapevine. Plano West’s six goals in the tournament have come from five players – including twins Casie and Brooke Ramsier.

STAT STARS: Lauren Bateman scored four goals as San Angelo Central (San Angelo, Texas) defeated Antonian (San Antonio, Texas), 6-0. ... Stanford-bound Chioma Ubogagu of Coppell (Coppell, Texas) scored twice as the Cowgirls routed Ursuline Academy, 3-0. ... Laramie Holifield scored both goals as Midland (Midland, Texas) defeated Nolan Catholic, 2-1. … Tessa Andujar of San Clemente assisted two goals in the team’s 4-0 win over Southlake Carroll. … Taylor Freeman scored twice as Hockaday (Dallas, Texas) defeated Martin (Arlington, Texas), 2-1. … Meagan Person had three assists and Morgan Fancher scored twice as The Colony (The Colony, Texas) handled Antonian, 5-0.

INJURED: Southlake Carroll senior and Notre Dame-bound Taylor Schneider sustained what coach Matt Colvin said was a high left ankle sprain in the first half of the team’s match with San Clemente. Colvin said it was unlikely Schneider will play in Saturday’s match against Klein Oak (Spring, Texas).

DAILY MVP: Schumacher was the MVP of Thursday’s action with two goals, and it’s hard not to give her the honors yet again Friday. The senior scored both goals as Aquinas knocked off No. 1 Boyd and Nolan Catholic, each by 1-0 margins.

AN IDOL? Holly Cavanagh was a member of the McKinney Boyd girls’ soccer team, but left the squad last week to pursue an a chance to make American Idol. Cavanagh, a singer, currently is in California, according to Boyd coach Jimmie Lankford.

Nolan Catholic High School and Southlake Carroll play host to one of the nation’s most competitive tournament which once again includes only the best teams, not only in the area, but in the nation. Each year we increase the field of teams and this year is the biggest event yet—with 32 total teams from Texas, California, and Florida. Four teams in this years showcase have been ranked #1 in the nation in the last several years, while 11 of this years 32 Invitational teams have gained national respect already this year in the National Rankings: #1 McKinney Boyd, #2Coppell, #4 Ursuline, #5 San Clemente, #10 Plano West, #13 Clear Lake, #18 Seven Lakes, #31 Southlake Carroll, #35 Nolan Catholic, and #40 St. Thomas Aquinas. Spread the Wealth; Lady Vikes Down the Cardinals

The Lady Vikings come back from break with something to prove and they do it on the road, early.

Senior, Annie Smithey scores her first of the year in the first minute and it was just a matter of time before someone else stepped up to the table which wasn't until John Paul evened the match with 5 to play in the first half.

The Lady Vikings were resiliant throughout the match sticking to what works best for them and that is getting bodies forward. John Paul took 4 shots on goal compared to the 14 from the Lady Vikes and it was in the 68th minute when Junior, Allaire Langdon scored the first goal of her career of the 11th corner of the match. That goal turned out to be the game-winner and improved Nolan Catholic to 7-5-1 in district play.

With 1 more district match remaining next Tuesday against TCA, the Lady Vikings look forward to hosting the Nolan Showcase next weekend. The Nolan Showcase sees teams from all over the country. The Lady Vikings enter the Christmas Break with 3 straight wins and 15 goals.

Are the Lady Vikings back on track?

After a slow start to the season the Lady Vikings have averaged 3 goals a game and only given up goals to Ursuline over the past 5 games. Megan Billingsley and Kayleen Negron have scored 3 goals each in those 5 games, Haley Spotts gets her first, and defender, Sarah Chandlee scores 2 goals on her first 2 shots of the season.

Goalkeeper, Paige Harris and sophomore, Ashley Fischer are finally back healthy and Nolan still awaits the return of senior forward, Annie Smithey who has been out the entire season.

With two matches left in district play, the Lady Vikings are more concerned with peaking at the right time. The Lady Vikings have clinched a playoff berth and look forward to public school competition in January and February to prepare them for the post-season which begins in February.

Lady Vikings head coach, Jay Fitzgerald, has enjoyed the journey to this point which is surprising due to a program high 5 district losses. "I love this group, we have taken our knocks but we keep getting back up, " Fitzgerald commented, "Our players know what is expected of them and they will respond....there is a lot of soccer to be played and I trust each and every one of these young ladies to get the job done."

The Lady Vikings will be back in action on January 4th as they travel to John Paul.

Lady Vikes Turn Corner

The Lady Vikings start to turn the corner after a dismal 3-4-0 start during the first half of the season.

After the Thanksgiving Break, Nolan is 1-1-1, with a victory coming on Monday night after a very impressive performance. The Lady Vikings travelled to Bishop Lynch and outshot the Lady Friars 22-4 but it wasn't until the 80th minute that junior, Gaby Larson scored the game-winner for Nolan Catholic, her second of the season.

It was a much deserved result for the Vikings as they put together a very consistent performance putting constant pressure on Lynch the entire match. Haley Spotts led the way with 5 shots on goal. Paige Harris picked up her 3rd shut-out of the season.

"Our group deserved this win tonight - a clean slate on the road is always a positive and it doesn't matter who it is against," comments Lady Vikings head coach Jay Fitzgerald.

Perseverance helped Nolan Catholic get this win.

They kept the ball well and finally broke down a Lady Friar team that sat all 11 players behind the ball in the final 15 minutes of play.

The Lady Vikings go on the road again on Thursday to take on Plano Prestonwood before the return home on Friday taking on Bishop Dunne at Doskocil Stadium in their final match of 2010.

Margaret stormed onto the scene her freshman year as the teams leading scorer with 24 goals and 4 assists for 52 points. She was a very intelligent player with a nose for the goal. She was in the right place at the right time. She had extreme presence in the box and was not afraid to mix it up. Margaret had an incredible work ethic and helped lead this program to many highs during her successful high school career. Even though Margaret missed about 70% of the season her junior year due to a knee injury she still played over 80 matches for the Lady Vikings scoring 54 goals and 15 assists for 123 points. Margaret played club soccer for D’Feeters ’85, Texas Image ’85 and ’82, and JATO Image ‘84.

New Season ahead for the Lady Vikings

The Lady Vikings are in unfamiliar territory at 3-4-0 after the first half of the district season but all and all have plenty of positives to build on as they move into Season 2.

Nolan Catholic has battled injuries and a lopsided 5-0 loss to the nations #4 team, Ursuline. The Lady Vikings received a pre-season ranking of #35 in the country by ESPNRise and beleive that that is where they belong outshooting opponents 108 to 34 through 7 games. In 3 of their 4 losses, they put 36 on target while conceding only 7. In losses to Liberty, John Paul, and TCA they also had a 21-7 corner kick advantage.

There is another 7 games to play in district and 6 teams will make the playoffs with the Lady Vikings never finishing less than 2nd. That is still in their sights as they start Season 2 with Liberty Christian at home on November 29th.

Here are some of the memorable moments that have defined this impressive, consistent program over the years...

#10 Defeated 5A Powerhouse Plano Senior High School in a Shoot-Out in the Lewisville Cup

The Lady Vikings pride themselves on playing the best competition in the country. They always have one of the toughest schedules year in and year out from tournaments, to showcases, to the best public and private schools from the West Coast to the East Coast.

The Nolan Catholic Women's Soccer team defeated Plano Senior High School in a shoot-out on January 24th, 2004 in the Lewisville Cup. In route to the championship, the Lady Vikings defeated Frisco 5-0 and tied Plano East 1-1 and Flower Mound 0-0 to earn their spot in the final against defending champion, Plano. In the championship, the Lady Vikings and the Lady Wildcats were scoreless at the end of regulation and the 2 OT periods and the match was to be decided in a 35-yard dribble-up shoot-out. Heather Ulliman and Laurel Faulhaber scored their attempts for the Lady Vikings and Lady Viking, Goalkeeper Brittant O'Brien saved all but 1 attempt by Plano in what would be a 2-1 victory for the Lady Vikings.

Hats Off to Murray: Firsts

Junior, Lindsay Murray scored a hat trick on Saturday against Bishop Dunne in route to a 7-0 win for the Lady Vikings. Megan Billingsley, Kayleen Negron, Sara Chandlee, and Gaby Larson each scored their first goals of the season. Negron and Larson each inked their first career high school goals.

The Lady Vikings move to 3-2-0 on the year and in Saturday's win they earned 13 corner kicks. "We were able to establish a good rythme today on a very narrow field and our players handled it well," said head coach Jay Fitzgerald. This was the first time all year the Lady Vikings have played on natural grass.

The Lady Vikings return home on Monday to take on John Paul II and again on Wednesday as TCA comes to Fort Worth. Both matches will kick-off at 8pm.

Lady Vikings Roll Past Lions

The Lady Vikings even their record at 2 with a 3-0 shutout win over the Presontonwood Lady Lions on Thursday night. Nolan Catholic gets the game winner from Senior, Mexican International, Alex Rios on a free kick from about 30 yards out in the 15th minute.

The Vikings didn't stop there, as they put 2 more goals away in the first half of play. Both goals coming from freshman, Elizabeth Havenhill, the first ans second of her high school career.

"It is nice to get goals from our young players," head coach Jay Fitzgerald commented. Havenhill has played several roles throughout the young season. Fitzgerald added, "It was nice to see the excitiment from Liz after scoring her first high school goal, we expect more out of her as the season go on."

Junior, goalkeeper, Mary Heidt only had to make 2 saves in route to her first high school shutout.

The Lady Vikings will travel to Bishop Dunne on Saturday for a 1pm kick-off. That game was moved from Friday night.

LVS Get First District Win

The Lady Vikings (1-2-0) avoid dropping its first 3 matches with a 2-1 win over Bishop Lynch on Monday night. Nolan has never lost 3 consecutive games in the history of the program and Lindsay Murray's 2 goals keep that impressive mark alive.

Bishop Lynch get an early goal but Murray answers in the 10th minutes to equalize.

The Lady Vikings continued to attack the entire match outshooting the Lady Friars 12-2. It wasnt until the 72nd minute when Murray struck again - that was all Nolan Catholic needed to get their first victory of the year.

Prestonwood comes to Doskocil Stadium on Thursday. Kick-off is set for 6:00pm.

On Friday, the Lady Vikings travel to Bishop Dunne for a 5:30pm kick-off.

Nolan looks to make-up much needed points after they dropped a late week match to Ursuline 5-0 last Thursday night.

A game that turned into a track meet saw the Lady Warriors take a corner in the 2nd OT period to defeat the women of Nolan Catholic by a score of 1-0. "Set pieces can be the bread and butter of any team and Liberty was opportunistic," commented Lady Vikings head coach Jay Fitzgerald, "we created a lot of good chances and have to be sharper in front of goal." Haley Spotts and Lindsay Murray combined for 9 shots.

With 13 games remaining in district play, Fitzgerald is going to take it game by game. Ursuline is next, 20-time State Champion Ursuline. The Lady Vikings play host to the Lady Bears this Thursday night at 8pm at Doskocil Stadium. The JV will play at 6:30pm.

With nine of 11 starters returning this winter, the Lady Vikings return plenty of experience in 2010. Of the 22 players that dot the Nolan Catholic roster, 14 earned letters the previous year. The Lady Vikings are young but have plenty of experience featuring senior, defender Alex Rios would helped the U17 Mexican Women's National Team qualify for the 2010 U17 FIFA Women's World Cup. Rios plays club soccer for FC Dallas.

The Lady Vikings return firepower, creativity/flare, and goalkeeping which are all characteristics which have helped the Nolan Catholic Women's Soccer Program gain local, regional, and national respect each year. The program will host one of the nations most prestigious college showcase events again in January, the Red Bull Nolan College Showcase which will take place January 13-15, 2011. Teams from California, Florida, Louisiana, and Texas will be represented in the event. ESPN Rise will once again cover the event and the nation's #1 team will be determined based on results of the event.

The Lady Vikings pride themselves in playing one of the most competitive schedules in the country. Some of the top LVS 2010-2011 opponents are Ursuline, San Clemente (CA), Marcus, Southlake Carroll, and Grapevine.

The Lady Vikings feel good about where they are after 2 weeks of pre-season with the seasons first district game right around the corner. Everyone has contributed in their own special way, on and off the field. There is something about this group that feels different.

Lady Vikings Head Coach, Jay Fitzgerald commented, "I feel a different type of energy with this group of young ladies."

In the 2 scrimmages against the Nolan JV Boys and the inter-squad match, the chances that have been created are through individual flare and the interchange of small numbers around the ball, creating problems for opposing teams. Fitzgerald went on to say, " I don't even know where the attack is coming from; they seem to be on the same page."

The Lady Vikings go on the road on Monday night to welcome Liberty Christian to the district. This will be the first match for the Liberty Warriors since they moved up to 5A this season. That match will kick-off at 7:30pm. The JV will play before at 6:00pm.

LVS TAKES THE FIELD

The Lady Vikings took the field for their first scrimmage against the Nolan Catholic JV Boys. The boys took a 2-0 lead in the first half which held for the entire match.

"I was very encouraged in the way we managed the game," said LVS head coach Jay Fitzgerald, "we handled the pressure and passed the ball very well, establishing a pretty good rythme the entire match."

The JV boys were very athletic and had good speed up top. The back line for the Lady Vikings sustained that speed for the majority of the match.

Fitzgerald went on to say, "we made good decisions in the midfield and did a nice job winning the ball back and creating good chances getting into the front third of the field."

The Lady Vikings will play the JV Boys again during a Homecoming Week match-up on Wednesday night at 7:30pm.

LVS11 Underway

Week 1 in the books. The Lady Vikings are looking for another return to the State Championship to avenge a 3-2 loss to 20-time State Champion, Ursuline.

The outlook for 2010-2011 is extremely bright for Nolan Catholic. They return the majority of their offense and 8 of 11 starters from last year and only lose 6 of 23 letterwinners. It will be much of the same for this years team, but with a new sense of urgency, as they continue to have something to prove. "We had a fresh start last season but I think this year we know our identity and we are only a week into the season," said Nolan Catholic Women's Soccer head coach, Jay Fitzgerald.

The Lady Vikings are coming off one of the best seasons in history finishing with a 21-5-1 overall record and a National ranking as high as #15 by ESPN Rise.

Coming up this week, the Lady Vikings will play a couple inter-squad scrimmages, kicking off the season at Liberty Christian a week from Monday and then host Ursuline two days later, at Doskocil Stadium.

Rios Prepares for World Cup; Road to Trinidad

Join us for the first installment of the Road to Trinidad by Lady Viking Senior Defender, Alex Rios. The FIFA U17 Women's World Cup kicks in September as Rios' Mexican National Team takes on Germany on September 5th.

I have come to realize that there are many things I could share about my World Cup training experience. First, the training itself is challenging. There is two practices a day every day. The first is a running practice and touches on the ball. The running consists of some very hard runs, some that the main team can't even complete. We run up a steep mountain, up steep hills, sprint around the field for time, sand, or other things like that. We were always tired after the first practice. Recovery is very important in Mexico. we all need to be in top shape for the Cup. The running gets easier as the days go by. The second practice consists of shape and game play. Every scenario that can be played on the field, we practice the defensive side and the offensive side.

There are always ups and downs.

The ups are the feeling you have after a hard running drill. We were so excited to finish the running drills, not because we didn't have to run anymore, but because we finished as a team and it is a good feeling. Or in the afternoons, playing the right ball to the right place is always the best feeling.

The downs were injuries. Having suffered a swollen tendon in my left knee, I was taken out of practice for almost 5 days. It's hard because you're there to play soccer and only play soccer, and you can't do that. It was very frustrating for me. I got better with the help of therapy and care from our doctors. The experience is very overwhelming, but we will be ready for the World Cup.

This training has been some of the hardest and most competitive training I've ever done. But I know in my heart that we will put up a good fight in Trinidad and Tobago this September.

LVS Recognized at All-Sports Banquet

The Nolan Catholic Women's Soccer team will be recognized at the All-Sports Banquet on Sunday. Goalkeepers, McKenzie Sauerwein and Paige Harris stole the show. Sauerwein has been the most consistent player over the past 3 years winning 1st Team All-District and 1st Team All-State honors each year and she was recognized on Sunday at the Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year. Paige Harris took home the "T" Award and is only a junior so we look forward to her picking right up where Sauerwein left off.

Nolan Catholic Lady Vikings Head Coach, Jay Fitzgerald, will be in Los Angeles on Wednesday to shoot a commercial for adidas. The shoot is at Raleigh Studios in Manhattan Beach, CA.

Fitzgerald has aspirations to be on camera; he is the voice of TCU Women's Soccer as he broadcasts all the home games and some road games on the radio and live webcast. He is the media director for JATO Media and also starred in a Sports Illustrated commercial in 1998 and an extra on the NBC series Friday Night Light's in 2008.

03/22/10 - Although the U.S. under-17 women's national team failed to qualify for the 2010 Women's Under-17 World Cup, there a few American high school students who will be competing in the games.

Alex Rios, a junior defender at Nolan Catholic (Fort Worth, Texas), and Christina Murillo, of Ojai, Calif., played for the Mexican under-17 squad that finished the CONCACAF Championships as a runner-up to Canada.

Rios' e-mail to her high school coach Jay Fitzgerald read, "I'm so excited to qualify for World Cup. Being part of this is something that I've been dreaming about since I started soccer. To be doing this at such a young age is my dream and I'm making it happen. It's the most amazing feeling in the world."

Mexico advanced to the final with a 3-1 overtime victory over Costa Rica in the semifinals, a match that featured a dramatic overtime goal by Murillo that sparked the victory. That result secured Mexico of one of the two CONCACAF bids to the World Cup.

"That feeling at the end of the game was unforgettable," Rios wrote. "Being able to qualify after that kind of fight through our bracket then the semifinals, it was just the best feeling in the world. It felt like the game was never going to end, but when it did I didn't want to get off that field. After the game ended and we were celebrating, I didn't want that feeling to go away once I left the field."

Rios Heads to World Cup; Women's U17 Final Mexico v Canada Highlights

Lady Vikings Defender, Alex Rios and the Mexican U17 Women's National Team came up short against Canada 1-0. The games only goal was scored in the 8th minute and Mexico was unlucky dispite playing with a man advantage due to a Canadian player being sent off. Late in the game Mexico hit the crossbar twice. None the less they have earned a berth in the FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup in September.

"It was an amazing experience. This tournament was just a little taste of what we'll see at the World Cup," Rios commented, "Losing this game didn't really matter to us. Yeah, it would have been nice to win, but both of these amazing teams are going to something bigger than this tournament. I'm so proud to be part of this team, and I can't wait for World Cup this September!"

Nolan Catholic's Alex Rios to Play in U-17 Women's World Cup

ALAJUELA, Costa Rica - Congrats to Alex Rios, Lady Vikings Junior Defender, has qualified for the 2010 Women's Under-17 World Cup. She is a member of the U-17 FIFA Women's National Team of Mexico and has 4 caps thus far in the tournament. Mexico defeated Costa Rica 3-1 in route to the championship against Canada on Saturday, March 20th. Watch LIVE on http://www.concacaf.com/. Rios' dreams come true, "I'm so excited to qualify for World Cup. Being part of this is something that I've been dreaming about since I started soccer. To be doing this at such a young age is my dream and I'm making it happen. It's the most amazing feeling in the world."

Christina Murillo scored from the kickoff that started the second extra time period and Mexico beat Costa Rica 3-1 Thursday night to reach final of the CONCACAF Under-17 Women's Championship.

Murillo dribbled just beyond the midfield circle before launching a right-footed blast that arced over Costa Rican keeper Fabiola Murillo and just under the bar.

Tanya Samarzich added an insurance goal in the 110th minute to assure Mexico of facing Canada in Saturday's final. The two will join host Trinidad and Tobago at the World Cup in September.

Since CONCACAF member Trinidad & Tobago will host the U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup in September, just two World Cup berths instead of the usual three were available at this tournament, both going to the winners of the semifinals. This means the US doesn't qualify for the first time ever.

This is such a special moment for Rios as she looks forward to the championship against Canada on Saturday, "Going into the final of this tournament makes me so excited.I know that this is going to be one of the hardest games ever even though we've beaten Canada twice. They have always put up a good fight and I don't doubt that they will put up a good fight on Saturday."

Soccer Helps Overcome Adversity

After the catastrophic earthquake that struck Haiti in early January, no one thought Haiti’s U-17 Women’s National Team would be able to compete at the CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Championships in mid-March in Costa Rica. But despite all odds, they are here, and the players from their first opponent – the United States -- are filled with both empathy and admiration.

Before Jan. 12, the opening match for the USA at the CONCACAF Under-17 Women’s Championship was just a game. A vitally important game for sure, but it was just another step in a quest for a berth to the 2010 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

That all changed when the ground started shaking in Port-au-Prince.

The 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti produced tragic images streamed across TV sets in America and the world. Even before the quake, Haiti was one of poorest countries in Western Hemisphere, but the pictures were almost unimaginable. An estimated three million people were affected, at least 230,000 people were killed (although the figure continues to grow), 300,000 more were injured and more than 1,000,000 were left homeless. An estimated 250,000 homes and 30,000 businesses collapsed or were severely damaged, among them the headquarters of the Haiti Soccer Federation.

The head coach for Haiti’s U-17 Women’s National Team died when that building fell, along with more than 30 officials of Haiti’s soccer federation.

Amazingly, Haiti was able to gather their U-17s and travel together to the neighboring Dominican Republic to train and prepare for the tournament. The match against the United States on March 10 at Alejandro Morera Soto Stadium in Alajuela, Costa Rica, will be the first international sporting event for Haiti since the disaster.

“Sports have the power to unite people and the fact that Haiti was still able to assemble their team and come to the CONCACAF championships is a testament to the great spirit of their players and administrators,” said U.S. U-17 Women’s National Team head coach Kazbek Tambi. “So many people lost their lives and it’s likely that every player on their team had relatives or friends that passed away. It’s a traumatic situation and the fact that they have mustered the character to come here is pretty amazing.”

The tragedy produced an outpouring of support and aid from around the world. The U.S. U-17s will also do their small part to try to brighten the spirits of the Haitian players. Each U.S. player brought to Costa Rica a small bag or backpack filled with things they thought another 16 or 17-year-old might enjoy as well as some basic items that often might be taken for granted. The U.S. Women’s National Team also donated a few large duffel bags full of used cleats and new Nike casual gear for the U-17s to give to the Haiti players while Nike sent a bushel of new soccer shoes to be passed on to the USA’s Haitian counterparts. Each U.S. player wrote a note of support for the Haitian players and put it inside the bag she brought.

The U.S. is making arrangements to give the gifts to Haiti following the completion of the first round. First, though, there is a soccer game to be played. And while the U.S. players will have the plight of the Haitians on their minds before and after the match, they know that during the 90 minutes on the field, they must focus the task at hand, for their team, for their country and for themselves.

“For them to be here, I think just shows a lot of perseverance, their drive to succeed and their desire to do something positive for their country,” said U.S. captain Morgan Brian. “We have a lot of respect for them and I know I speak for our entire team when I say that I don’t know if we, as individuals, would be able to play if we had to face the tragic circumstances they have in their lives right now.”

For the most part, all of the U.S. players come from comfortable homes in quiet neighborhoods not far from great soccer fields in beautiful sports complexes. For them, it is difficult to imagine what the Haitian players must be going through. But as part of the process of growing into positive young women with an awareness of the world and empathy for those less fortunate, they are trying to.

“I think it’s incredible that they’ve come to play this tournament,” said U.S. midfielder Alex Doll.
“They’ve lost their homes, family members and their friends. It’s just really cool that these girls are able to represent their country and hopefully they can inspire the people of Haiti just a little bit. I know we are inspired by them.”

“We know they will be fighters on the field and that will be a challenge in itself,” added Brian. “After what they’ve been through, a ninety-minute soccer game might not be that tough.”

Haiti’s participation in the tournament is an example of how sports can help overcome adversity. No matter what the result of the USA-Haiti game, it is clear that just by being at the qualifying tournament, Haiti has already won.

“We just think it’s cool that it’s not the full men’s national team that is representing Haiti for the first time since the earthquake, it’s a group of 17-year-old girls,” said Doll. “They are playing for something bigger. We have to believe that when you’ve had so much taken away, to still have one thing you love, and that’s soccer, well, that’s a great thing.”

US Youth Soccer announced the rosters and schedule for the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (US Youth Soccer ODP) Championships on March 12 and 14 at Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix, Ariz.

Nolan Catholic's, Makenzie Koch and Ursuline's Jana Jeffrey have been selected to the 1994 Girls ODP Championshis Region III Roster.

State-level US Youth Soccer ODP Boys and Girls teams in the 1993 and 1994 age groups will play semifinal matches on Friday, March 12, beginning at 1 p.m., with championship and consolation matches to be played Sunday, March 14 beginning at 8 a.m. The teams competing have qualified by winning their respective age group at their US Youth Soccer ODP Regional Championships.

A 4-0 win over Antonian inks a spot into the State Championship match against Dallas Ursuline on Saturday at 12pm at Durbon South San Stadium. Emily Grider scored 2 goals and had 2 assists while Emily Baker and Haley Spotts each added 1. It was a hard fought game for the Lady Vikings as Antonian continued to put pressure on Nolan - they were physical and good on the ball but the Lady Vikings opened them up in the 2nd half for a chance to play in the final on Saturday.

The Lady Vikings take on Antonian on Friday at 11am at Durbon South San Stadium for the 2nd consecutive year in the State Semi-Final, a team they defeated 4-0 last year. Antonian was District 2-5A champion. If the Lady Vikings win that game they would play the winner of 19-time State Champion, Ursuline and TCA.

The State Championship match will be played at 12pm on Saturday at Durbon South San Stadium.

Things Come in Pairs for Lady Vikings; First for Chandlee

The Lady Vikings head to San Antonio on Thursday for their 10th straight appearance in the TAPPS Final Four with a 5-0 victory over Austin St. Michael's on Monday morning. The teams leading scorer, Emily Grider adds goal #26 to her season and her 6th game-winner. She also had an assist. Maygan Ditucci had 2 goals and added an assist as well. Haley Spotts scored a goal and an assist and Katlynn Koch had a pair of assists. Sara Chandlee scored her first goal of her career.

Nolan Catholic gets their 20th win improving to 20-4-1 and another Final Four appearance which begins Friday in San Antonio. The Lady Vikings will take on Antonian College Prep at Durbon South San Stadium at 11:00am. The winner advances to the State Championship the following day on Saturday at 12:00pm.

REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SET FOR MONDAY

The Lady Vikings will play host to Austin St. Michael's on Monday, February 15th. Kick-off is set for 11:30am at Nolan Catholic's Doskocil Stadium. The teams were originally set to play on Saturday at 1:30pm but do the heavy snow, the field was unable to be cleared.

The other regional match-up that was moved to Monday was Dallas Ursuline and John Paul II - that game will be played at Parish Episcopal at 7:30pm on Monday.

TCA and Antonian both punched their ticket to the Final Four with victories on Saturday. TCA traveled to Houston to play St. Agnes and won in golden goal fashion by a score of 1-0. Bishop Lynch wasn't as fortunate, as Antonian defeated them 4-1 in San Antonio.

The Nolan Catholic/St. Michael's winner will advance to take on Antonian and the Ursuline/John Paul II winner will advance to take on TCA. The Final Four will be played in San Antonio next Friday and Saturday at Durbon South and Mata Stadiums.

SNOWED IN; Regionals Moved to Monday

Fort Worth expected 1 to 3 inches but got 12 to 14 inches, the largest single day snowfall in history. The Dallas/Fort Worth area has been blanketed with snow for that past 20 hours and as you look over the area there is nothing but white.

The Saturday Regional Championship between the Lady Vikings and Lady Crusaders has been moved to Monday, Feb. 15th at 11:30am at Doskocil Stadium on the campus of Nolan Catholic High School.
